Henrico is located in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a portion of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Henrico was the scene of the second settlement in the colony and was established in 1634 as one of the eight original shires or counties. The county was named for Henry, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of King James I of England.
Henrico County is the site of several Civil War battlefields, including Fort Harrison and Malvern Hill. Tuckahoe Plantation, Thomas Jefferson's boyhood home, is in Henrico County as well as the Wilton House Museum, built for the family of William Randolph III in 1753.
One of the nation's most beautiful gardens is Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Henrico County. And another county attraction is Richmond Dragway in Sandston, a quarter-mile, International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) sanctioned drag racing facility. The Richmond Braves, AAA team of the Atlanta Braves, plays at The Diamond.
Richmond International Raceway is located in the central portion of Henrico County near Mechanicsville, just north of the City of Richmond corporate limits.
