Goochland County is located in the Central Virginia region on the western edge of the Richmond metropolitan area.
Goochland was founded in 1728 from Henrico shire, and was the first county to split from Henrico. Goochland was named after Sir William Gooch, the royal lieutenant governor from 1727-1749. At the time of its founding, Goochland included all of the land from Tuckahoe Creek, on both sides of the James River, west to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Golf is a major sport in Goochland, with public access to Sycamore Creek Golf Course in Manakin and Royal Virginia Golf Course in Hadensville. Goochland also features polo matches and is home to The Commonwealth Cup Polo Match every fall.
The James River in Goochland County provides opportunities for boating, waterskiing and paddle sports. Horseback riding stables and horse shows are other activities enjoyed here.
